Floyd East Jr. was born August 14, 1969 in El Paso, Texas. Officer East attended Andress High School in Northeast El Paso, graduating in 1989. He joined the Texas Tech Police Department in December 2014 as a guard for the TTUHSC El Paso campus. With lifelong aspirations to be a police officer, Officer East pursued a peace officer license from the El Paso Community College Law Enforcement Training Academy. He graduated from the academy in June 2016. Soon after, Floyd advanced in his career to police officer and was transferred to the Texas Tech Lubbock campus to complete field training. Officer East had plans to transfer back to El Paso and rejoin his family once a position became available with the Texas Tech Police Department in his hometown at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center El Paso. The native El Pasoan passed away Oct. 9, 2017 during an evening shift.
Officer East is described by family, friends and coworkers as a "hero", a "genuinely good guy" and "someone you could always rely on."
Floyd is survived by his wife, Carmen, and two daughters, Ana and Monica.
Scholarship Criteria:
Scholarship funds will benefit undergraduate or graduate students in the Institute for Forensic Science or in the Criminology Concentration for Sociology majors at Texas Tech University. The scholarship will have a preference for students who are from the El Paso area.
