Combating Infant and Maternal Mortality in Amarillo

In recognition of National Breastfeeding Awareness Month, the InfantRisk Center is launching a crowdfunding campaign to support the expansion of information offered to pregnant and breastfeeding mothers both locally and worldwide.

Funds generated from this month’s campaign will support the center’s desire to combat the high rates of infant mortality as well as maternal mortality in Amarillo and throughout the Texas Panhandle through the expansion of information available on the MommyMeds App.

The 2018 Community Health Assessment revealed that nearly half of the zip codes areas in Amarillo exceed the state average for infant mortality. At the state level there are approximately 5.9 deaths per 1000 births. The overall average of the city of Amarillo itself aligns with that of the state however, six out of fourteen zip codes measured higher than 5.9 per 1000 with one area being almost three times the state average at 18.36 deaths per 1000 births.

This campaign will be used to expand the content available on the center’s MommyMeds app and provide the area’s underserved populations with free access to the app. In addition to educational information currently available on the app, Dr. Hale and Dr. Baker plan to release a 12-part educational series geared toward overcoming the difficulties often associated with raising a new baby. Users will receive premium content on accidents, injuries, social stressors, premature birth, SIDS, co-sleeping as well as content on maternal health and resources for families. Through strategic partnerships with local organizations and clinics, this funding will also allow the center to provide 800 free downloads of the MommyMeds app to increase access to this educational information.

We hope that this initial campaign to raise $5,000 will help to combat the high rates of infant and maternal mortality in Amarillo and throughout the Texas Panhandle. If you would like to learn more about the InfantRisk Center please email peyton.bivins@ttuhsc.edu.
